Profile June Carey RSW RGI SWA SSA PAI
b.1942. Bannockburn, Scotland

June Carey studied at Glasgow School of Art in 1959 and Edinburgh College of Art in 1981.

June Carey's first solo exhibition was held in Glasgow Print Studio in 1993 and was reviewed by W. Gordon Smith:

"Her presence, even in the biggest of salons in the best of company, has been signalled by one of her naked figures whose gender is often uncertain. All of this is accomplished with fastidious subtlety and skill from the prodigious source of her imagination. She allows her subconscious to dictate to her and long ago took the courageous decision to follow its instant lead without question even when some of the images she summons threaten to unnerve her."
Carey's work has been included in many prestigious group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including Eton College, Windsor, Mercury Gallery London, Olsztyn Castle Poland, Pallant House, Chichester, Mall Galleries London, Royal Scottish Academy Edinburgh, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, Glasgow, Glasgow Print Studio, touring Berlin, London, Bath, Iceland, Madrid & Los Angeles.

In 2021 she was invited by The Folio Society in London, to create a set of drawings to illustrate the Limited Edition book "Rob Roy" by Sir Walter Scott, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth.

2014 Invited by Stirling Smiths Art Gallery & Museum to paint two murals, permanently displayed in the entrance to the Museum. (Stirling Smiths Art Gallery & Museum, Dumbarton Road, Stirling).Selected Awards & Bursaries include Scottish Arts Council Awards, Glasgow district Council Residency in Quebec Award, Anne Redpath Award, Hope Scott Trust Award, BP Award (travel) European City of Culture Woman 2000 Award, British Council Travel Award, Sennelier Award, Bruce Finnie Award, Connell & Connell Award, Dundee District Council Award, Forth Valley & Creative Scotland Award, Angus Council Award, Scottish Arts Club Award, McDonald Orr Ltd Award.

Since 1989, she has had 20 solo exhibitions, which include invitations from Linlithgow Burgh Halls, Stirling Smiths Art Gallery & Museum and The Meffan Museum & Art Gallery. She was one of three selected artist to exhibit at Olsztyn Castle, Poland, invited artist for the Pastel Master Class at 'House for an Art Lover' Glasgow, invited 'Prize Winner” selector for Meffan Museum & Art Gallery and invited to lecture on her work at Edinburgh’s Fruit Market Gallery.

In 2014 she wrote and published her autobiography 'The Art of June Carey, Seeing Through the Dreams' which is available at The National Galleries of Scotland and this web site.
